How to Make a Gothic Birthday Cake

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup butter (softened) 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 2 eggs 1 oz. red food coloring 2 cups flour 1/4 cup cocoa 1 cup buttermilk 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tbsp. white vinegar Nonstick cooking spray 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup butter 1 tsp. vanilla 4 cups confectioners' sugar 2 tbsp. milk Black food coloring Electric beaters




Instructions

  1. Making the Cake


    • 1

      Spray a 13x9 inch pan with nonstick cooking spray and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

      Cream 1/2 cup softened butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar together in a large mixing bowl. Beat in 1 tsp. vanilla, eggs, and red food coloring.

      Mix flour, cocoa, and baking soda together in a separate bowl.

      Add flour mixture and buttermilk to the creamed butter and sugar mixture. Beat well and then add white vinegar and mix the batter is uniform in color and consistency.

      Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.



    Making the Frosting

      Prepare the frosting while the cake cools by mixing the 1/2 cup shortening, 1/2 cup butter, 4 cups confectioners' sugar, and 2 tbsp. of milk together.

      Whip the ingredients together using electric beaters and add black food coloring one tsp. at a time until the frosting is black.

      Store the black gothic frosting in the refrigerator until ready to use.




    Assembling the Cake

      Remove the cake from the pan when it is cool and place it on a clean counter.

      Cut off the corners of the cake to form a coffin shape as shown in the picture.

      Frost the coffin-shaped cake using the black frosting.
